What people need gone

Six kinds of call account for most of the trucks dispatched in Orange County, and each one is priced a little differently.

  • The sofa and the mattress

The commonest single-item calls, and the ones the City of Orlando will take free, two at a time, on yard waste day if you can get them to the edge of the property. A paid pickup earns its fee when the sofa is upstairs, the HOA wants it gone today, or there are six items rather than two. HomeGuide puts a mattress pickup at $70 to $100 and a sectional at $200 to $375.

  • The refrigerator nobody will take

Unincorporated Orange County excludes refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners from curbside large-item collection, and the city requires the doors off before set-out. A hauler takes it whole, has the refrigerant recovered as EPA Section 608 requires, and scraps the shell at a metal recycler, because Florida Statute 403.708 bars white goods from the landfill.

  • A garage or a whole house

The job that fills a truck. A packed two-car garage or the contents of a parent's house is priced by the fraction of the bed it fills, usually across more than one trip, with donation drop-offs for what is still usable. Fixr puts a full truckload at $450 to $650 nationally.

  • The remodel leftovers

Broken tile, drywall, cabinets and lumber from a kitchen or bathroom job. Only the Orange County landfill on Young Pine Road accepts construction and demolition debris, at $42.70 a ton, and the transfer stations refuse it, which is why heavy material is priced by weight rather than by truck fraction.

  • What the storm left

Fence panels, screen enclosure frames, soaked carpet and the limbs the county truck will not take mixed in. Orange County collects storm debris only in separate vegetative and construction piles, and it cannot enter gated communities at all, so associations and vacation-rental managers arrange their own hauling.

  • The hot tub in the lanai

Drained, disconnected, cut into sections and carried out through the screen door or the side gate. Osceola County alone has more than 30,000 vacation homes, and a spa that has reached the end of its life is a regular call from that side of the metro.

What Orlando picks up free, and when a hauler is the better call

Two public programs take a surprising amount for nothing, and the honest first question on any call is whether one of them covers the job. City of Orlando residents get two large items picked up free on their yard waste day with no scheduling at all: refrigerators, dishwashers, washers and dryers, sofas, chairs, dressers, toilets and sinks, anything a crew can load by hand. Items too big or heavy for hand loading need the claw truck and cost extra, scheduled by calling the city, and refrigerator doors have to come off before set-out. The city also offers a dumpster bag pickup at $100 a bag.

Unincorporated Orange County runs a weekly large-item day alongside yard waste with a limit of three cubic yards per household, out before 6am, up to four passenger tires. The county excludes refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners from that pickup altogether, and sends residents to the Young Pine Road landfill, where a refrigerant appliance is accepted for the $10 minimum charge.

A paid hauler earns its fee in four situations: the pile is bigger than two items or three cubic yards; it is inside the house, upstairs or behind a gate; the HOA or the landlord wants it gone before the next pickup day; or the item is one the free program refuses, such as a refrigerator in the county or a hot tub anywhere. Everything else gets the free route and a note of which day to put it out.

Paint, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane, fluorescent tubes and anything with a circuit board go to the county household hazardous waste drop-off at the landfill or the Porter transfer station, Monday to Saturday, free for residents, with paint limited to 25 gallons a vehicle. No hauler should offer to take those, and the can't-take list on the junk removal page repeats it.

Why Orlando property owners route the call through us

Three things separate a pickup that goes the way it was quoted from one that turns into an argument in the driveway.

The number is agreed before anything is lifted

The single loudest complaint about junk removal anywhere is a quote that changes once the truck is in the driveway. Haulers routed from here write the price down after seeing the pile, by phone, from photos or on site, and the loading starts once you have said yes to that figure. Stairs, a long carry, heavy material and refrigerant appliances are the things that move a price, and each one is named at estimate time rather than discovered at the door.

Junk removal typically runs $150 to $600, averaging about $300, Fixr national cost data

Priced by the space it takes up, with the bed shown to you

A load is priced by the fraction of the truck it fills: a minimum load, a quarter, a half, three quarters, or the whole bed. The fill line is the whole argument, so the crew shows you the bed before loading and again after, and the fraction on the estimate is the fraction you can see. Single items such as a mattress or a dryer carry their own price instead of a fraction.

A full truckload lands at $450 to $650 nationally, Fixr

Insured local haulers who know where each item goes

Florida issues no state license for junk hauling, so the honest credential is an Orange County Business Tax Receipt plus liability insurance, and every hauler routed from here carries both. The rest is knowing the routes: metal recyclers for appliances, because Florida bars white goods from landfill burial; the Young Pine Road landfill for construction debris; the county drop-off for the paint and chemicals a truck cannot take.

Three Orlando pickups, start to finish

Representative jobs, described the way they usually run. No names, no addresses, no invented invoices.

  • A move-out near the university in August

A two-bedroom apartment off Alafaya Trail with a lease ending the week fall move-in starts, a futon, two mattresses, a desk and a dozen bags, all on the second floor of a walk-up.

Photos sent from the landing; priced as a half truck with a stairs adjustment named on the estimate; picked up the next morning, bagged mattresses first, bed shown before and after.

Outcome: Unit empty before the walkthrough, the complex's dumpster untouched, and the deposit question settled.

  • A refrigerator and a dryer in unincorporated Orange County

A new appliance delivery that would not take the old refrigerator, a dead dryer in the garage, and a county program that excludes refrigerant units from curbside pickup.

Both priced as single items by phone; refrigerant recovered by a certified technician before scrapping, as EPA Section 608 requires; both shells to a metal recycler because Florida keeps white goods out of the landfill.

Outcome: Gone in one visit, with a note of where each went on the receipt.

  • A fence and a lanai after a named storm

A gated subdivision where the county truck does not enter, forty feet of blown-down fence, two torn screen panels with their frames, and oak limbs across the back lawn.

Vegetative and construction debris loaded as two separate piles, the way Orange County requires, priced as a full truck plus a quarter with no weight surcharge because the material was light.

Outcome: Curb clear in an afternoon and the association's own debris account untouched.

How a pickup runs in Orlando

The same four steps on every call, with the written figure in the middle where it belongs.

  1. Say what needs to go

Call or send the form with what it is, roughly how much, and where it sits: curb, garage, upstairs, behind a gate. Photos with a door or a trash can in frame for scale help the estimate hold.

  2. Get the figure in writing

The hauler prices the load by truck fraction or by item, names any adjustment for stairs, heavy material or refrigerant, and sends the number before the truck is booked.

  3. Pick the window

Same-day and next-day pickups are available across Orange County. You choose the window; the crew calls when they are on the way.

  4. Loaded, swept, gone

The crew carries everything from wherever it is, shows you the bed, sweeps the spot, and you pay once it is on the truck. Receipts for the landfill or a donation are available on request where they apply.

The figures behind an Orlando junk job

Sourced numbers, because the fraction of a truck and the fee at the landfill gate are what the estimate is built from.

  • $450 to $650

A full truckload of ordinary household junk, in Fixr's January 2025 national cost data. The quarter, half and three-quarter fractions scale down from there, and a minimum load runs $75 to $125.

  • $42.70 a ton

The Orange County landfill rate for construction and demolition debris on Young Pine Road from October 1, 2026, against $56.40 a ton for ordinary garbage and a $10 minimum. Uncovered loads are charged double, which is one reason a tarped truck matters.

  • 3 cubic yards

The weekly free large-item allowance for a household in unincorporated Orange County, collected on yard waste day, with refrigerant appliances excluded (Orange County Solid Waste).

  • 80 percent

The share of the 12.1 million tons of furniture and furnishings Americans discarded in 2018 that went to landfill, per the EPA. Donation drops are where a hauler keeps a usable sofa out of that number.

  • 355,000 cubic yards

Storm debris collected across Orange County after Hurricane Ian and Tropical Storm Nicole, from October 2022 to January 2023, in 7,940 truckloads (Orange County newsroom). Gated communities were on their own for all of it.

  • 60 percent

The share of occupied City of Orlando homes that are rented (2023 American Community Survey). Turnover is why May and August, when the university calendar flips, are the busiest months for apartment cleanouts.

What Orlando callers ask first

Straight answers to the questions that come up on nearly every call.

Call (407) 326-0014
How much does it cost to have junk removed in Orlando?

Most pickups land somewhere between $150 and $600, with about $300 the national average in Fixr's 2025 data, and a full truckload between $450 and $650. The figure depends on the fraction of the truck the load fills, plus adjustments for stairs, a long carry, very heavy material and appliances with refrigerant. Single items are priced on their own: HomeGuide puts a mattress at $70 to $100 and a washer or dryer at $70 to $205. The written estimate is the number that counts, and it is agreed before anything is loaded.

What is included in a $99 junk removal special?

Usually the minimum load: a single item or a few small ones that fit in the first few feet of the truck bed, picked up from the curb or the garage, with the labor and the disposal fee included. Fixr puts a minimum load of roughly 60 cubic feet at $75 to $125 nationally. What a special does not include is the next fraction of the truck, a carry down a flight of stairs, or a refrigerator, and the estimate should say so in writing before the truck is booked.

What is the cheapest way to get rid of junk in Orlando?

For a City of Orlando address, the two hand-loadable large items the city collects free on your yard waste day. In unincorporated Orange County, the three cubic yards a week collected with yard waste. Household hazardous waste is free to drop at the Young Pine Road landfill or the Porter transfer station. A paid hauler is the cheaper route once the pile is bigger than those limits, when it is inside the house, when the HOA wants it gone before pickup day, or when it is a refrigerator the county truck will not take.

Do I have to be home for the pickup?

Only if the items are inside. A pile at the curb, in an open garage or behind an unlocked gate can be picked up with photos sent ahead and the price agreed by text, and the crew sends a photo of the cleared spot afterward. Anything inside the house needs somebody there to open the door and to confirm which items go, because the one thing nobody wants is the wrong dresser on the truck.

Can you come today?

Same-day and next-day pickups are available across Orange County, and the dispatcher books the earliest window the hauler covering your area has open. The line is answered seven days a week, so a Sunday call books a Monday window at the latest. No arrival time is promised beyond the window itself, and the crew calls when they leave the previous job.

Where does the junk go?

It depends on the item, and the hauler names the route at estimate time. Usable furniture goes to a donation drop that will accept it. Appliances go to a metal recycler after the refrigerant is recovered, since Florida law keeps white goods out of the landfill. Construction debris goes to the Orange County landfill on Young Pine Road, the only county site that takes it. Paint, chemicals and fuel stay off the truck and go to the county household hazardous waste drop-off, which is free for residents.
